ONTARIO CITIZENS' ASSEMBLY TO BE "UP AND RUNNING" BY SPRING 2006 (August 16, 2005)
Ontario Democratic Renewal Minister Marie Bountrogianni told the Toronto Star that the Ontario citizens’ assembly on electoral reform will be “up and running…in the spring of 2006.” The assembly will consist of randomly selected citizens. Minister Bountrogianni said the size of the assembly is still being considered, but will include at least one citizen from each Ontario riding.
Creation of the citizens’ assembly was among the election promises made by Premier Dalton McGuinty. The assembly will be charged with determining whether Ontario needs a new voting system. Their recommendation will be presented to Ontarians in a referendum, likely to be held in conjunction with the next provincial election.
